New Providence
April 1861. As the American Civil War begins, Catherine, an orphaned young black woman living in rural Ohio, is haunted by strange and frightening visions during which she creates paintings that appear to predict war battles. Word of her creations spreads to the nearby village of New Providence and throughout the surrounding county. Catherine and her adoptive family, already regarded as others and outcasts because of racism, misogyny, and religious bigotry, soon find themselves targeted by a fearful, suspicious, and deeply divided community.
